Nostalgia

I spent Thanksgiving with my family last week. We had a wonderful time. I also did some snapping of lovely old things. I feel so humbled in the presence of old things. It's as if I should be quiet and absorb the stories, the memories, the character that they possess. To me, theses old things are tiny little treasures of the past...I cherish the warm, fuzzy feelings they give me. The old houses, the old barns, the old trees, the old peeling paint, the old moss-covered brick...I needed inspiration and I found it!

Many, Many Thanks!!

Last night I hosted my first art sale in the Lavender Loft. Wow! What a night!!! My friends came out to support me and encourage me in this new adventure. I feel truly blessed. Thank you all for your kind words and your generous purchases! I know that Artworks for Youth will appreciate your generosity, too!

Julie M. scored the framed "Lively Limbs" give away! Enjoy!!

I really can't tell you how much it meant to me to have you all here with me, viewing my art, sharing stories of "what you see" when you look it. I have awesome friends!! And thanks, too, to those of you who couldn't make it, but sent sweet emails and phone calls...it means sooo much!
And lastly, I want to honor my Grandmothers...they are the precious ones that have given me the inspiration to be bold and feisty and paint what I'm passionate about. I so wish they had been with us last night...in a way I guess they were!
Hugs to you All!!!

Bad Hair Day

Desperately in need of a wig today...
If you ever need a fun weekend away, try Asheville, NC! This city has so much to offer...awesome food, exciting art galleries, funky shops, and magnificent views of the mountains! I was window shopping downtown one day and decided to snap these adorable ladies.

Monday Recovery

Any of you want to completely avoid Monday and go back to bed? From the looks of this sofa full of furry laundry...that may be a great option for me. I guess the dog is also not ready for Monday.
Unlike lazy dog, I plan on being productive this week. I am going to cross things off my list, breaks some eggs, make some goals...all that good stuff. The list is long...here's a tidbit of it...

1. I will be painting...I have started 3 new canvases (eggcellent...you'll see soon) and I'm finishing two pearfect ones TODAY!

2. I will be deadheading my garden and eating Cherry Garcia simultaneously.

3. I will be staying off facebook, except for at 5:30am, 2:30pm, and 7:30pm...

4. I am not going to get lost in "blog world" as often as I would like to.

5. I will be using EVOO to make nutritious dinners with the fam from a Yum-0 cookbook I just bought.

6. I am not going to eat the rest of the Oreos. (I think)

7. I will try to remember to get dressed before noon and floss (maybe).

8. Maybe I'll surprise Mr. Tidy by making the beds and mopping the floors (doubt it)

9. I am going to finish making prints of my work to sell online...I have printed about 70 already!

10. I am staying out of the stores...the fall decorations are too beautiful. Lot of purple this season...hard for me to resist. Many, Many budget busters!

That's it folks...that's my plan. Hold me to it. Now, where to begin? Oh yeah, laundry...

Giving Thanks

Today there is a crisp breeze blowing through open windows, crunchy orange leaves are dancing on the driveway, the sky has never been bluer, Mr. Tidy is asleep on the sofa after baking homemade chocolate chip cookies, and George Winston's melodies are filling this home.
I have been thinking on this fine fall day of my many blessings. Tremendous blessings...my family, my friends, the support I receive from all of you is wonderful. Good things are happening for me and I wonder if I am deserving of them. I am grateful, very grateful, very grateful.

Mr. Potato Head Spoke to Me Last Night

I think maybe I have too many eggs in my basket...I'm feeling a little anxious about my "to do" list. It's quite long. I guess we all have the same long list. In the midst of my chaotic, long-listed life, I really had a revelation last night. Of all things, peeling potatoes for homemade soup is what inspired it. I found amazing beauty in the colors of the potatoes. While enjoying those vibrant purples, pinks, and browns, I realized that I should just relax, enjoy the simple things in life (like peeling potatoes), and stop worrying about my to do list. I'll never look at potatoes the same again. Weird how inspiration and relaxation can occur at the most ordinary moments. I think all too often we are so caught up in busyness of life that we forget to really "look at the potatoes"! Today I am trying to break some eggs or cross things off my list...thank goodness I have some leftover potato soup to encourage me.

Survivorship

Today I attended "Celebrating the Art of Survivorship" Luncheon and Auction, presented by The Wellness Community of East Tennessee. I went with my friend Cheri. We had so much fun! We had the opportunity to bid on vacation destinations, art and jewelry, fashion items, and sports and entertainment items. Cheri walked away with an awesome photograph by a fantastic local artist, Jennifer Simpson (see above picture with Cheri and I holding the framed photo). We met inspiring cancer survivors, and listened to a courageous guest speaker, Sigourney Cheek. The Wellness Community offers wonderful support for people with cancer and also support for their families. It was a terrific day of many blessings.

Color is a Mysterious Language!

I see the reds, yellows, and oranges peeking through the greens...I know it's only a matter of time before those fabulous colors explode all around us...how could we not be in love with this time of year? This dreamy photo was taken in Asheville, NC last fall. Enjoy your weekend!

Paul Gauguin said the following: "Color! What a deep and mysterious language, the language of dreams."

Feisty Has Not Been So Feisty...

I've been a little under the weather lately. I had some surgery last Friday, and I have been in my pajamas ever since. I'm finally feeling better today! My parents left me this morning (I'm still pouting) with a clean house and a pot full of chicken and dumplings. I have been well taken care of. As much as I hate surgery, the ideas for paintings that occurred to me while under the influence of anesthesia are really cool, and I can't wait to put them on canvas! I have a smile on my face and a paintbrush in my hand today. I will be feisty again in a few days...funny paintings to follow...keep checking!
I took my dear mom to the botanical gardens yesterday for a quick trip...see her reflection in the sphere? She's a doll and the best nurse on earth!!

Thanks to my in-laws for coming for a visit last week! It was great to see all of you!!

Meet Me There, Baby!!!

I have been blessed with awesome girlfriends throughout my life. I spent this past weekend with a few that are so dear to me! We all grew up together in a small town in Georgia. I met Sharon in first grade, and Pamela and Erica a little later. We have remained friends for all this time! A few days ago, I talked with Erica, and she suggested we meet in Atlanta for a girl's weekend. I'm in for sure. It was a very last minute trip, but couldn't have been any more wonderful if we had planned it for months.
We met Friday night and stayed up way too late catching up on life. Saturday we shopped (until I literally dropped) for fabric and for jeans! It was really a Sisterhood of Traveling around the Mall for Hours to Find the Perfect Pair of Pants weekend! (we loved it!!!) Saturday night was spent having a yummy dinner at Maggianos. After dinner, we spent hours combing through Erica's yearbooks (what a great idea to bring those). It was a weekend of countless laughs, a few tears, many heart to heart conversations, a little talking smack, a little 80's music, a lot of reminiscing of the old days, and a realization of how blessed we are to have each other! I came home feeling so loved.
Although our hair has begun to show a new kind of highlight, and our laugh lines are a little more visible, I know our hearts will always be the same...connected to each other. I love you girls...let's do it again soon!

Our photobooth shoot in the mall:

I couldn't resist showing some of these old photos of us...Oh! The memories...and the big hair!!!

Home-Body

I've been at home today...cleaning...Mr. Tidy will be so happy tonight...the floors are vacuumed, the mold in the shower is gone, and the laundry is folded and put away...and I even had time to paint a little! Oh Happy Day!!!

I Should...

I should be weeding the garden, mowing the lawn, or pruning the shrubs, but I'm not. I should be shaving my legs, "pruning my eyebrows", or getting this messy hair chopped, but I'm not. I should be walking with my friends in the neighborhood or wreaking havoc on my thighs in yoga class, but I'm not. I should be vacuuming up dog hair, scrubbing greasy cabinets, or cleaning dusty baseboards, but I'm not. I should be hiring a housekeeper RIGHT NOW, but I'm not. Instead, I have a paint brush in my hand, a big blank canvas, and new tubes of fabulous paint. Watch out! I'm in the mood!

I'm Smiling Today...

I love waking up on a cool morning, having a big cup of coffee, and being productive in my studio. Today, I've experienced all of those wonderful things. Yippee!!!

Happy Labor Day!

It's hard to believe it is already September. It has been a fun, yet busy summer for our family. I must admit I am ready for cooler temps. The nasty stomach bug has finally left our house. We are having a relaxing weekend at home. I hope you are having a great weekend, too!

Looking for a Little Inspiration...

...in my coffee cup this morning. We're going on day 3 of a stomach bug here. Instead of painting, I am watching the umpteenth episode of Sponge Bob. I may just have to pour another cup...

If...

If I had just one more day to spend with her. If I could hug her and smell the Oil of Olay on her skin one more time. If she could make me chicken-n-dumplings one more time. If she could walk me through her garden and point out her favorite hydrangeas, geraniums, and violets one more time. If I could swing with her in her backyard and hold her precious hands one more time. Today I miss my Mimi. What I wouldn't give if I had just one more time...
I made the artwork in honor of my Grandmother (Mimi). She loved birds, and had a really beautiful birdbath in her yard. The painting below of "Mimi Angel" hangs over the door in my studio. Mimi always wore bright colors, bright pink lipstick, and loved to wear costume jewelry. I think I captured her festive spirit in this painting. I like to think she watches over me.

Thank You Friends!

Thank you all so much for joining me on this exciting new journey! It is thrilling and at the same time a little scary. You'll never know how much I appreciate all of the encouraging emails! I hope you'll continue to peek in on the progress! Many, many thanks to you!
Jackson Pollock said following and it rings so true to my ears..."Painting is self-discovery." I am definitely rediscovering my passion!

Summer Yummies...Let's Enjoy Them While We Can!

I cannot believe summer is almost over...I plan on eating as many cherries and tomato sandwiches (with fresh basil and black cracked pepper and Kraft Mayo) as I possibly can the next few weeks! What about you? What's your favorite summer yummy? Hungry?

What's on Your Bedside Table?

These are a few of my favorites (today)...
1. the New Creative Artist by Leland
2. Georgia O'Keeffe by Benke
3. the Creative License by Danny Gregory (this book is giving me incentive to paint without inhibitions!)
4. Artist to Artist by Brown (where I get quotes for my blog)
5. Instant Art History by Robinson (definitely need to brush-up on this!)
6. The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Edwards (just finished...amazing book)
7. Frida Kahlo: Painting Her Own Reality by Abrams (of course, I'm always
reading about this terrific artist!)

pondering possibilities...

yup...that's what i'm doing today. sitting in this silent house wondering what's next. trying to figure out a path to follow. confusing and scary it is to me. sitting in the studio with a blank canvas staring at me. begging me to paint it with something. more canvases lying around waiting to be completed. looking at the lists of things to do that somehow never gets done. some days i'm so afraid to walk in this room. i'm afraid the dreams i have won't become reality...that the ideas in my head won't translate to canvas. i do have a plan. i am not disciplined, though. or is that my excuse? i let other things eat up my time and prohibit me from doing something worth while. i know i am not alone. i'm waiting for inspiration to hit me in the head, and the discipline to kick me in the rear! it will come...it will come...
Edgar Degas said, "Art is really a battle."
Today, my friend, it really is...

Happy Birthday to My Dear Sis!

To my dear sis...where do I begin? You've been my best friend since the day you were born! It's so wonderful to see the woman you've become - A precious wife to Mark and confident and relaxed mother to one awesome baby. I love you and wish you lived next door. Then I guess I'd actually have a excuse for the house to be such a mess. I wish I could spend this special day with you. We'd dance to Poison's Every Rose Has It's Thorn, tease our bangs into a "claw", put on lots of blue eyeliner (because you can never have enough), and eat Mama's boiled peanuts, homemade ice cream and as many brownies as possible. Take you back, 80's girl? Hugs to you always, beautiful one!

He Finally Painted with Me!!!!

After being married for almost 15 years, my man finally picked up a brush and painted with me! I couldn't believe he'd even go for the idea. Not only did he go for it...he painted without ANY reservation! It was like watching a child in art class getting to paint for the first time. So Absolutely COOL! I think he needs to keep painting...
Picasso again..."Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Relay for Life

This past Friday night we hung out at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The company my husband works for has a "booth" and makes it a fun overnight experience. We didn't spend the night, but did stay long enough to see a fantastic fireworks show! Thanks everyone for making it a fun night! What a wonderful cause to help fight cancer, celebrate survivors, and remember loved ones we have lost. There are more than 4,800 relays all over the nation on one night. Sign up next year! It's a great cause and it will definitely make you appreciate the gift of life! Count your blessings...

Elvis Costello kind of morning...

Spent the morning planting a perennial called, "Veronica." Thought it appropriate to sing a little Elvis while I worked. Veronica is that splendid blue-violet plant behind my favorite coneflower and yellow yarrow. Could not make me any happier right now with how that turned out! Guess this has turned into the "flower blog" lately. It's just what I'm digging at the moment! More art coming soon...

Happy in the Garden

LOVING being in my garden every morning...my coneflowers greet me as I walk out the back door!
New tomatoes on the way...
I found these magnolia pods this morning and I think I have a new love. I love finding garden surprises...happens almost every day. These pods remind me of a kid with hair sticking up . Funny how nature can make you laugh!

One of My Favorite Days in Knoxville

Ever have one of those days when it reaches the end and you think, "Wow, what an awesome day?" Well, I had one yesterday! My friend Yvette and I hit the town at full force. We took it all in...starting with breakfast at Maple Grove Coffee (love the grits!), then moving on to garage sales, market square stores, the farmer's market (in market square), stanley's greenhouses, jerry's artarama, nostalgia (a fun, eclectic, antique store), and of course starbucks! We tried to hit the galleries, but they weren't open yet...maybe next time.
We came home with some fab soap from Earth to Old City, some yummy cookies and bread from VG's Bakery, organic locally grown strawberries, and manchego cheese from Locust Grove Farms. Yvette also bought a divine green linen skirt from a local artist. I must say I had a blast. Aren't days spent with friends wonderful?
I came home and took a long nap, right after I ate tons of strawberries, bread, and cheese! Then went with the fam to see Prince Caspian...loved it! The scenery is beautiful...so much symbolism, too! Really made me think!
